Uniform Lighting for Uniform Plants at GREENKOM’s Cannabis Farms

The Challenge?:
Finding a better lighting solution for cannabis growth capable of providing even lighting to all parts of the plant.

The Hortiv Solution:
After a number of steps combining development and on-site trials together with the GREENKOM team, Hortiv delivered lamps with the special features needed for more efficient production of medical cannabis. The new lamps require less power, produce less heat, and provide more precise lighting.

The Result:
Thanks to even lighting, the plants’ production rate is higher, their flowers are more uniform, and all this takes place with lower power consumption for both lighting and cooling.

“About two years ago, we met for the first time with representatives of HORTIV and purchased from them a lamp of a model suitable for cannabis. Following 3 to 4 steps of further development, we arrived at the product version we use today during various phases of both the growing and the flowering stages.

Innovation in the structure of the lighting resulted in two significant advantages: The first - energy optimization and cost savings. To find lightning fixtures that are suitable for different types of vertical growing systems and expand the range of crops that can be efficiently cultivated this way.

Hortiv’s systems and support gave Vertical Field the flexibility it required, with more adaptable and adjustable equipment and solutions, by performing trials for the particular needs of vertical farming together.

Vertical Field is now able to extend its research and development efforts with lighting that is appropriate for different types of crops and stages of development.

“When talking about growing plants there are several parameters
essential to realizing crop potential. One of them is the lighting
system where we need to determine color, intensity, and duration
of illumination. Obviously, all this has to make financial sense with
lower power consumption and increase energy efficiency for our
investment.

This includes farming in closed enclosures, in containers and later,
in hangars.

I chose to work with HORTIV as our main supplier because they
have the ability to produce the fixtures and the equipment,
customizing the products according to my requirements. They are
knowledgeable, so even if I come with my own requirements or
fantasize about specific solutions, they make things happen. They
can provide the tools and flexibility that help us make all kinds of
corrections during the development process.

It is important to note that the field of vertical growth in closed
spaces (vertical, indoor) is relatively new. HORTIV is open to be
part of a joint learning process, which is one of the reasons I enjoy
working with them.

We know that different plants at different growth stages differ in
their lighting requirements. For example at the seed-to-seedling
stage, the plant will invest more energy in producing a strong and
healthy root system, whereas in the seedling-to-mature plant
stage, the plant will invest more energy in developing foliage. In
fruits, for instance, light plays a central role in promoting
blossoming.

When growing in closed spaces, the lighting we provide the plant
is their only source of light, so we need to learn how to adjust and
reach the right type and level. Building new knowhow and products
is critical in an area that has not yet been well studied. Despite a
lot of information available on the internet, not all of it is reliable
and it’s important to verify it.

Looking ahead, most companies currently active in the sector
concentrate on growing leafy greens rather than a variety of other
vegetables. We have been busy researching for 3 years aiming to
expand the range that can be grown in closed spaces. To mention
just one initiative, we are working on growing strawberries
simultaneously with pod crops, tomatoes, beans, zucchini or melons.

We have operations in Austria, where we are establishing a cluster
that supplies to supermarkets in Vienna. We also run a cluster in
Israel for the Rami Levy chain for which we grow leafy greens.” said Idan Ayalon, Agronomist

Two HORTIV Parallel Systems for Plantae Bioscience’s New Tissue Culture Growth Rooms

The Challenge:
Plantae’s researchers were looking for a system that would allow flexibility
when implementing varied lighting regimes in the growth rooms in order to
study the reaction of plants to different growing conditions.

The Hortiv Solution:
The answer was to install two systems in parallel:

The first steup provides flexibility for Plantae to test and find the optimal conditions required for growing the various tissue cultures in their collection.

The second one, in which the composition of the light is predetermined and supports previously calibrated plant tissue culture growing protocols.

The Result:
Based on these observations, Plantae formulated precise work protocols
needed to reliably produce a wide range of plants in cultures.

And Then There Was Light at RCK’s New Medical Cannabis Research Labs

The Challenge:
While building its new tissue culture lab, RCK was looking for lighting with the sufficient spectrum and wavelength, but that would not take up too much space or emit too much heat.

The Hortiv Solution:
HORTIV’s controllable product solutions covered the entire range of parameters that RCK required for its research, and did so despite space constraints.

The Result:
The lab is new and so far a solution has been found to control the lighting environment for its research experiments, which no company other than Hortiv was able or willing to develop for them.

“As a research farm for medical cannabis, RCK engages mainly in the cultivation of new strains. Part of the company’s development was to establish a laboratory for tissue culture.

When this need arose, we contacted Hortiv MegaLight and presented them with our particular lighting requirements: In the laboratory the distance between plantlets is very small. Care must be taken so that power is not too high and the culture media do not overheat, while still ensuring sufficient spectrum and wavelength. Another constraint was that space was limited and therefore the lighting fixtures could not take up too much room.

In the end we chose the controllable product (more expensive) because we are a research laboratory and not a growth incubator, and therefore experiments must be conducted with different wave types. The controlled product allows our scientists to “play” with the different parameters of light intensities and wavelengths.

Hortiv listened to our needs and allowed us to design the lighting system according to the shelves and the distances between them. We are at the beginning of our research activity - so far, things are looking good.

It is worth noting that in the process of searching for the solution we tested other products. There was no one to talk to who had manufacturing capability and the ability to adapt the products to our specific needs. Even the larger companies in the field have a specific set of products and they don’t have the ability (desire or willingness) to adapt what they have in order to offer an appropriate solution to our needs.
